Fakt Purusho Maate (2024) Review

Fakt Purusho Maate 2024 poster

During the sacred sixteen days of Shraadh, a departed patriarch named Purshottam returns to earth from the afterlife, armed with strange powers and set on stopping his grandson Brijesh's marriage to the woman he loves. What follows is an absurd comedy of errors in which an old man's outdated principles collide head-on with a younger generation that refuses to bend. Beneath the laughs, the film pushes back against inherited patriarchy and makes a case for gender equality.

Fakt Purusho Maate is the follow-up to the 2022 hit Fakt Mahilao Maate, and it flips the lens from women to the men who cling to old rules. The setup is pure Gujarati family farce with a supernatural twist. A dead grandfather, Purshottam, gets a fixed number of days back on earth during Shraadh and uses them to sabotage his grandson's love marriage. The producers, Anand Pandit and Vaishal Shah, frame the whole thing as a swipe at generational patriarchy, and the writer-director duo of Jay Bodas and Parth Trivedi keep that message running under the comedy rather than lecturing over it.

The draw for most audiences was the casting coup, with Amitabh Bachchan turning up in a special appearance that gives a regional film outsized reach. The everyday weight, though, sits on Yash Soni, Darshan Jariwala, Mitra Gadhavi and Esha Kansara, and the ensemble is where the film earns its warmth. Critics broadly agreed on the pleasures and the flaw. The Times of India gave it three and a half stars, praising the performances, the story and a satisfying climax while flagging a second half that runs long and grows predictable. Mid-Day Gujarati went higher at four, singling out the acting, music, dialogue and cinematography, and echoing the same complaint about length.

The result is a crowd-pleaser that knows its audience. Kedar and Bhargav's songs, the Ahmedabad backdrop and the family-comedy rhythm carry it, and it did solid business, crossing seven crore in two weeks. It is not tightly cut and you can often see the jokes coming, but the sentiment lands and the social point stays honest. Watch it for a warm festival-season comedy that wears a real idea lightly.
