Anang Desai anchors the film with the kind of lived-in gravity that keeps the melodrama honest, and the supporting cast around him, including Jignesh Modi and Chandrika Soni, keep the domestic scenes grounded rather than shrill. Director Irshad Dalal is clearly more interested in atonement and resilience than in easy laughs, and the film is at its strongest when it sits with the shame and stubbornness of a man watching his standing collapse. The comedy is folded into the family friction rather than staged as separate set-pieces, which suits the material.
The film is uneven. The suspense strand that the marketing leaned on is thinner than promised, and the pacing sags in a middle stretch that repeats its emotional beats. The resolution ties things up a little too neatly for a story that spent its first half insisting life does not. Even so, Fuleku earns its modest reputation. It is a small, sincere film about debt, dignity and the ways a family either holds or breaks under pressure, carried by a veteran lead who never overplays it. Worth a watch for Desai and for a story rooted in a very real 2020 anxiety.
