Shubh Aarambh arrived in January 2017 as an urban Gujarati family film that wore its Rajshri influences openly. The setup is neat. An America-based couple, Anupam and Manasvi, fly to Ahmedabad to arrange their son Shubh's marriage, and the bride they pick, Riddhima, happens to be a marriage counsellor who senses that her future in-laws' own long marriage has quietly come undone. Director Amit Barot builds a warm, wedding-season world of joint families, garba nights and sugary affection, and the first act sets it all up with real charm.
Critics agreed on where the film wins and where it wobbles. Harsh Chhaya, playing a poet in self-imposed silence, is the anchor almost everyone singled out, his baritone carrying the film's verse-heavy emotional weight, with Deeksha Joshi a bright, natural presence and the Aarjav Trivedi and Sanjay Galsar comic pair drawing the biggest laughs. The recurring complaint was structural. DeshGujarat's Jayesh Adhyaru, rating it two and a half out of five, faulted a film that tells rather than shows, resolving its central conflict through talk instead of incident and drifting at a stage-play pace. CreativeYatra was fonder but agreed the script never quite decides whether it is a wedding comedy or a love story, and loses a little on both.
What lingers is tone more than plot. The poetry of BD Banker and Rushi Vakil's melodies do much of the lifting, and the film leaves you glad even when the seams show. It is a gentle, family-first watch that opened a lane Gujarati cinema had barely used, more comforting than sharp, and best enjoyed with the whole household in the room.
