Shubh Yatra takes the very Gujarati obsession with the American dream and turns it into a warm comedy of small lies that snowball. Mohan, an accountant drowning in debt from a failed milk business, and his friend Hardik chase visas through a shady agent who insists married applicants clear the consulate faster, so Mohan invents a wife named Saraswativeena Devi on his passport. His own application is rejected, Hardik flies out, and Mohan ends up keeping the books for a theatre troupe run by a veteran actor. The real trouble starts when the troupe wins a US tour and Mohan has to erase a wife who never existed.
National Award winning director Manish Saini, working from the Tamil hit Aandavan Kattalai, keeps the tone light without turning the subject into a lecture. The Week's Nandini Oza gave it four out of five and singled out the comic timing and the way the film shows the migration craze without preaching, praising even the junior artists. The Times of India's Deepali Chhatwani landed at three, crediting the performances, direction and story. Malhar Thakar carries the film with an easy likeability, Monal Gajjar grounds the second half as the real Saraswati, and Darshan Jariwala lends the troupe scenes weight.
The writing leans on coincidence to keep its farce moving, and the resolution ties up a little too neatly for a story about a broken system. Still, the humour lands, the ensemble is sharp, and the film has something honest to say about the desperation and dignity behind the visa queue. Produced by Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan as their first Gujarati film, it went on to draw nine nominations at the Transmedia Gujarati Awards. For a regional comedy built on a heavy subject, it stays likeable from first frame to last.
